Woodman

Marked as an inn, not named, on the 1854 6” O.S. map. Brewery owner 1970 – Tetley’s. The inn was also known as the Mary McCree and a sign outside proclaimed the jingle: “This is the Woodman Inn as you can see but some know it best as the Mary McCree. Light refreshments we always keep here, also good spirits and glass of good beer” (R.Dennis). Site is now occupied by Starbucks Coffee and a Petrol Station Woodman Inn, Dewsbury Road, Churwell   The pub closed on 26 August 2013, was demolished, redeveloped and now occupied by Starbucks Cafe and a Petrol station According to R. Old Golden Fleece

There is a record of a property belonging to the order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem which possessed special privileges on this site in the Bodleian library at Oxford compiled between the years 1450 to 1500. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 the property became a tavern or inn with the emblem of the Golden Fleece. It is believed another ancient inn from which the Golden Fleece took its name stood on the other side of the green (R.Dennis). The 1930s building was demolished in 2010, the site is now occupied by a Tesco store. The sign of the Pub has been preserved outside of the new building. New Inn

It takes its name from the turnpike road built in the late 18th century, this is the Leeds to Elland Road. The New Inn was a transfer from the Bull and chain, formerly the Boars Head, an old coaching House on the Roman Road near Granny Farm (R.Dennis).
