New Inn (known as the Bottom ‘oil), 18 Elland Road, Churwell, Leeds LS27 7SS

The pub is still open

According to R. Dennis:

The New Inn, takes its name from the turnpike road built in the late 18th century, this is the Leeds to Elland road; it cuts across the Roman road at the entrance to Millshaw end, always known as the Churwell Bar, the other beyond the Commercial Inn, where the new road met the continuing old road.

The New Inn was a transfer from the “Bull and Chain” formerly the “Boars Head” a coaching house on the Old Roman Road near Granny Farm.  A right of way can still be seen linking the two sites.

It was at the New Inn, that William Chapman, the landlord, befriended Ceres Jackson, the famous trumpeter, who toured America with the famous Black Dyke Band at the turn of the century (19th).  He was a member of the Churwell Brass Band and the Leeds Grand Theatre Orchestra under Sidney Jones of “San Toy” fame  (a Chinese musical comedy)

A separate unattributed statement provides additional information and states that: “ The Boars Head, on Old road was situate to Primrose Walk, familiar to many as the Sparrow Barracks.  Stagecoaches made a detour from here through the Old Fold past the Manor then on to Manor Farm & Cottingley, Millshaw, Beeston and Leeds.

One landlord was John Charles the famous Leeds United, Juventus and Wales footballer
